Wasim Akram highlighted a decade of structural flaws in Pakistan cricket, pointing out PSL's total failure to produce elite batters.
Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram delivered a scathing assessment of Pakistan's cricket ecosystem, declaring that despite completing a decade of operations, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has failed to produce a single world-class specialist batter for the national team. Akram pointed to the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) constantly shifting domestic format as the root cause of systemic batting failure across red-ball and white-ball formats.
Addressing the state of the national squad, Akram emphasized that foreign franchise leagues cannot replace a rigorous, stable domestic structure. For six consecutive years, Pakistan's batting lineup has suffered from technical deficiencies, visible during international series where top-order players routinely falter against quality pace and disciplined spin.
When the PSL launched, administrators promised a pipeline of talent that would modernize Pakistan's international play. Ten seasons later, the league has delivered high-velocity fast bowlers and quick-arm spinners, yet the top-order batting remains fragile. Franchises prioritize four-over power hitters and pinch-hitters capable of quick 20s, neglecting the technical discipline required for 50-over matches and Test cricket.
Young batters selected straight from franchise cricket into the national team often struggle with swing, seam movement, and long-form pacing. While players like Babar Azam and Rizwan developed their foundations through long-format regional matches before PSL existed, post-PSL inductees lack ground-level red-ball experience.
Akram directly targeted the PCB's habit of altering domestic cricket structures with every change in board leadership. Over the last six years, Pakistan domestic cricket underwent repeated structural overhauls—shifting from department-led setups to six-region models, and then reverting back to a hybrid regional-departmental framework.
This instability leaves young cricketers without consistent multi-day matches or reliable pitches. Pitches prepared for domestic red-ball tournaments frequently lack standard bounce and seam movement, allowing batters to score easily on flat surfaces while failing in tough international conditions.
Fixing Pakistan's batting decline requires decoupling national team selection from PSL highlights. Short-form leagues show athletic intent, but they cannot teach patience, pitch assessment, or shot selection against quality red-ball bowling.
If the PCB aims to build a competitive batting lineup, it must enforce mandatory red-ball participation for all central contract players, standardize domestic pitch preparation, and maintain a fixed domestic tournament structure for at least five consecutive years. Without these structural fixes, Pakistan's international batting lineup will continue to rely on temporary fixes rather than proven talent.
Wasim Akram stated that despite running for 10 years, PSL has failed to produce a single high-quality specialist top-order batter for the national team. He argued that T20 franchise leagues focus on quick runs rather than technical durability.
Akram pointed out that constant structural shifts by changing PCB administrations over the past 5 to 6 years destroyed the domestic pipeline. Frequent switches between departmental and regional formats prevented young batters from developing proper long-format skills.
The PCB must maintain a stable domestic first-class structure for multiple years, improve pitch conditions, and stop selecting players for Test and ODI teams based solely on PSL performance.
